Route Overview

  • The most common route is to take the M1 (Monash Freeway) towards the southeast.
  • The total distance is approximately 140 kilometres (87 miles) and typically takes around 2 hours, depending on traffic.

Detailed Directions

1) Head onto the M1 Freeway (Monash Freeway)

  • From Melbourne, get on the M1 from Flinders Street and Kingsway.
  • Stay on the M1 heading southeast towards Dandenong.

2) Take the Exit to South Gippsland Freeway (M420)

  • Continue on the M1 until you see the exit for the South Gippsland Freeway (M420) toward Cranbourne/Phillip Island.
  • Follow the M420, which eventually becomes the South Gippsland Highway (M420).

3) Turn onto the Bass Highway (B460)

  • After passing through Cranbourne, continue on the M420, and then take the exit to the Bass Highway (B460) toward Phillip Island.
  • Follow the B460, which will take you through towns like Grantville and Corinella.

4) Cross the San Remo Bridge to Phillip Island

5) Continue on Phillip Island Road
